The guy made a trap for gadflies. Now his horses are calm
Summer months are the best time to have a great time in the sun and fresh air, but one of the biggest drawbacks of this season are a variety of insects. As soon as the temperature begins to rise, an incredible number of flies and mosquitoes of various kinds collapse on people.
Trying to get rid of them can be a problem if you are not prepared. But, fortunately, there are simple and effective home-made adaptations that can help you in the fight against such insects.
For example, take a look at this device, created by Dan Owsley from Indiana, USA. After several years of working with horses, he developed a simple gadfly trap that really works effectively. According to Owsley, in the first week 1697 gadflies died in it and almost all of them were large - about 2.5 cm in length.
The design of the device is quite simple. On wooden legs installed capacity, which is wrapped in a black garbage bag and filled with soapy water. And above it are two sheets of plexiglass, fixed at an angle of 45 degrees.
Oddly enough, the trap really works, because horseflies are visual hunters. They see a black garbage bag, think that this is what they would like to bite, and fly. Here they inevitably collide with transparent sheets of plexiglass, and then fall into the soapy water, where they eventually sink.
For more efficiency traps need to change the water every day (otherwise the smell of dead colleagues will scare the horseflies). Plexiglas must also be clean so that insects will not notice it.
