How to Turn Cardboard Boxes Into Adorable Halloween Costumes

1. Draw the shape of the fairy wings on either side of a vertical corner of a tall, rectangular cardboard box so they have a natural bend in the center. (We used a 24" x 12" x 12" box.)

2. Cut out the wings, making sure to leave the center edge intact.

3. Using a foam brush, paint an outline with acrylic paint, then add spots or designs to the interior.

4. Use hot glue to secure embellishments like mini colored paper doilies, gold glitter, ribbon, or trim.

5. Attach ribbon shoulder straps to the inside of wings with hot glue.

Crunchy Taco

1. Draw and cut a half circle on the side of a 18" x 14" x 12" box so the flat edge lines up with the bottom of the box, leaving the bottom of the box intact. Repeat for the opposite side of the box.

2. Cut a rectangular hole for child to step into in the bottom of the box.

3. Paint exterior of taco yellow with 2-3 coats of yellow acrylic paint, letting dry in between coats.

4. Cut tomatoes, ground beef, lettuce, and cheese from red, brown, light green, dark green, yellow, and orange felt. Hot glue along the inside edge of both taco halves.

5. Use hot glue to attach 27" length shoulder straps inside taco.

Candy Dots

1. Cut a piece of cardboard to 26" x 12" and cover it with stiff white felt, using hot glue to secure. (Or just use a white box!)

2. Use a serrated knife to halve 18, 2" round, smooth syrofoam spheres. You'll end up with 36 half-spheres.

3. Paint 12 pink, 12 yellow, and 12 blue. You may need multiple coats for darker shades.

4. Once dry, hot glue the spheres in a grid to your felt-covered cardboard, then attach a 20" length elastic to one end to create a neck strap.

1. Start with an 18" x 14" x 12" box and reserve one of the flat, longer sides as the front.

2. Cut a 9" x 7 ½" square in the top and the bottom for head and leg wholes. Then cut the top half of both sides for arm holes. The front and the back of the box should stay intact.

3. Using a foam brush, paint box with red acrylic paint.

4. Trace the bottom of a cardboard treat cup onto white paper, cut out and paint red to match the box. Once dry, mount in place with hot glue on the bottom of the treat cup. Then repeat to create six.

5. Secure the treat cups on the front of the box with hot glue.

Cotton Candy Salesperson

1. Start with an 11" x 14" x 4" box. Use an exacto knife to cut 6 X's in the top of the box (to push cotton candy cones into later).

2. Wrap the box in red wrapping paper like you would a gift box. The X's should be on top.

3. Glue a ribbon around the outside of the box, then stick on adhesive backed letters to spell out "Cotton Candy" (may need to reinforce with hot glue).

4. Cut a 48" or longer inch ribbon strap and hot glue in place to the sides and bottom of box.

5. Use the exacto knife to repunch the X's in the top of the wrapped box. Cut paper cones from craft paper and tape together.

6. Cut squares of cotton batting and submerge in a mixture of two cups water and 3 drops food coloring. Dip the squares in until saturated, gently wring out, and then place on a protected surface to dry overnight. Once dry, scrunch and stuff into paper cones. Place cones into box.
