Create a fairy tale: a light jacket with wool and yarn

Piercing peace and quiet, sparkles of snowflakes and light frost, fancy patterns on the windows and fluffy hats on the branches of the trees - all these winter delights inspire to create new unusual felt outfits. In order to achieve an effective result, in some cases it is necessary not to complicate, but on the contrary, to simplify the whole process as much as possible from the construction of the pattern to decoration and shrinkage. You will see the results of our experiments in this detailed master class on felting a light cape with elements of crazy-vul technique, where a thin layer of Australian merino wool instead of glue or flizelin serves as the basis.

At the initial stage it is very important not to rush into the pool with the head, but to try different combinations in advance, pile small samples from different types of yarn, evaluate the result and choose the most suitable option. We want to get a very thin, airy, soft, easily draped canvas; gleaming in the sun with bright sparks of sequins.

For the new model, we use about 200 grams of wool Australian merino of Italian production with fineness of 18-19 microns and one hank (100 grams) of yarn of the following composition: 67% acrylic, 11% polyester, 9% wool, 8% mohair, 5% sequin.

Our new idea is a short free jacket, with a flared silhouette, a wide sleeve and folds. This universal style is suitable for women with different types of figures.

The pattern is as simple as possible, but takes a lot of space, so if you are cramped in the room, you will have to lay out the wool in stages. Visually, it is inscribed in an oval measuring 220x160 cm; The main parameters remain unchanged. We adjust the size range only by changing the PD parameter (length of the armhole along the raglan line), if necessary, you can lengthen the pattern, based on the calculation of 1.5 * CI (product length). The edge line of the bead is drawn at a distance of 10 cm from the middle of the transmission, the SH (width of the neck) is 20-25 cm; SR (sleeve width) - 30 cm; ShI (product width) - 75 cm.

Let's build a pattern on a bright plastic film with a fineness of 120-150 microns, cut out the template and free up the working space for the layout of wool.

After such thorough preparation, the work itself is quick and fun. We start with the layout of the fur coat over the back part. The main scheme: parquet layout with an additional stabilizing layer along the open edges of the product (at the bottom, edge of the sleeves, shelves and neck). This is a kind of layout of the wool diagonally, but the strands are laid out not in rows, but in turn: crosswise, very thin strands - since in our model, felt is only the basis for fixing the threads.

Do not be afraid of lumens in a woolen cloth, you should avoid only the obvious holes. We propose to divide the material into piles before the layout, according to the table of approximate wool consumption given at the end of the master class.

The allowance for bending is 2-3 cm behind the edges of the template. After finishing the layout, gently moisten the surface with warm soapy water so that the fibers do not scatter in different directions. Fellers use a special diffuser; You can also take an ordinary plastic bottle by drilling many small holes in the cap.

We lay out the threads of the yarn on the surface of the pattern in a chaotic way, but not too tightly - do not forget that the wool in the process of felting shrinks and our drawing will be further compacted in the future. For convenience, you should pull the thread from the middle of the skein.

Cover the surface of the template with a mesh and carefully rub it until we feel that the fibers of the yarn and wool are interlocked. Since the layout is very thin, shrinkage occurs very quickly.

Turn over the template and continue to layout the details of the shelf. First, we bend the allowances from the back to the front, lay out a stabilizing layer on the edge, then lay out the wool and yarn in a similar pattern.

We moisten, grind as long as the shelf part can be bent to the side without fear; after that we continue the layout of the second part of the shelf in the same way.

We continue to carefully grind the jacket until the product becomes cramped in the template. We pay special attention to the folds and rub them in the plane to avoid wrinkles and creases.

Carefully remove the template (it can be used repeatedly, in other projects and when stored in folded form, it takes up very little space); then we continue the intensive process of felting, rubbing the product on a ribbed surface, tossing, kneading, like dough; rolling out in a roll in different directions - in length and width.

Squeeze, rinse jacket in warm water, continue felting, adding fresh soap. Shrinkage occurs very quickly, so you should not be very zealous, from time to time we check the dimensions of the product. We make sure that the sleeves and the shelves are the same length.

Take a string with a needle and hold the silhouette along the neckline. When drying, felt remembers the given shape. The jacket is free cut, so sit it on a mannequin is not necessary, it will be enough just to align the edges and tighten the folds.

We roll out the sleeves, if you want to tighten them a little along the length. We leave the jacket on the hangers or mannequin until completely dry.

We finish work on the jacket, hemming the ribbon for the tie along the neckline; we used velvet to avoid slipping.

Of course, walking in the winter forest in a light robe is still chilly, but like in a fairy tale, you can meet Morozko, who will warm and cover our beautiful Nastya with a warm sheepskin coat.
